Here Comes the Sun... Indoors

I have been inside for exactly 1 month.

And as many of us are learning how to cope, survive and evolve in these very trying times, I can’t help but mourn bygone rituals…. visiting/hosting friends, working out in a lively packed studio, roaming the shelves at a grocery store for only one or two items… 
 

But most of all, I miss the sun. I miss our dance as we move in and out of shadows. I miss the shield of warmth it casts upon my face and arms, and the glimmer it sheds in the eyes of my loved ones. I know the sun is always shining, but I miss the way it brightens my mood and invigorates my day to day.

A Mother’s Prayer

My daughter and I

May is a very special month for me. Not only is it a time where I celebrate being a mom, it is also the month I became a mom.  

My teacher Tej told me that the strongest prayer is a mother’s prayer for her child. I carry that with me everyday. When I think about how far I’ve come as a single mother, I owe a lot of it to prayer. When I was a little girl, I always prayed that I’d become a mom. I visualized getting married and starting a family and having a daughter to call my own.

When I found out I was pregnant, I prayed that my parents wouldn’t be upset that I was raising her alone… that I’d be able to survive on food stamps and welfare. I prayed that once I found a job, I could afford daycare and babysitters while working full time to make ends meet. I prayed that she be okay when we moved to Kentucky to take care of my parents before they died. I prayed that my grief and sadness of their passing would not confuse her.

I prayed that each time we moved to a new place, she would find new friends while I worked in Las Vegas as a magician’s assistant, and when I opened my first business as a colon hydrotherapist in Flagstaff, Arizona. 

I prayed that she continue to sing, paint, dance and follow curiosities wherever they may take her. I visualized her in her element, confident and at ease with who she is, and who she wants to become.

I prayed that she never let go of her dreams and that moving back to Los Angeles wouldn't jade her. I prayed that I could afford acting classes to better nurture her talents, and have enough time to drive her to auditions, where I prayed she wouldn’t get crushed or defeated by the process. I envisioned her remembering all of her lines, and making it light and fun.  And when she was up for a big part starring alongside Anne Hathaway and Robert De Niro, I prayed and visualized her dreams coming true.

I saw my daughter, Christina, blossom into a beautiful performer, singer, artist, daughter and friend. I watched her take risks, be bold, follow her heart, and always push through the let downs and celebrate the victories. I watched my daughter take charge of her life, never losing sight of her kindness, generosity and creative spark.

When we flew to New York City for the filming of “The Intern,” I was filled with so much pride watching her move through her dreams, and to see how far we’ve come together.

So I guess you could say I’m in the business of prayers.

Prayers are like frequency. They give us the power to heal, manifest, and align with our paths. It has given me the hope and harmony to move through the world and know that everything will not only be all right... it'll be amazing.
